MASERATI IS DEVELOPING a new rear-wheel-drive platform that it will share with Alfa Romeo, according to reports online this morning.

The new platform, which Maserati is working on with parent company Fiat, is expected to underpin all of the brand's models, including the Quattroporte sedan and the GranTurismo coupe and convertible.

According to Inside Line, Alfa Romeo will use the new platform to develop a successor to the 8C Competizione, including a new Spyder convertible.

The existing 8C, a limited-run, sell-out model, already utilises Maserati components and is built at its Modena plant.

It is unknown if Alfa Romeo will offer the new model in higher numbers, but the success of the 8C has proven that the Italian carmaker can create demand in the supercar market.

The platform will reportedly be designed to accommodate Ferrari's HY-KERS hybrid technology, giving Maserati and Alfa Romeo access to the growing hybrid market.

The new platform is not expected to debut in a new model until around 2012 or 2013, so it may be some time before these reports are confirmed.
