In a sad day for sportcar fans and British sportscar fans in particular, Marcos Engineering, makers of the Marcos sportscar range has announced that it will be closing its doors.

The winding down of Marcos sees the end of Canadian entrepreneur Tony Stelliga’s dream to build sportscars. Stelliga purchased a bankrupt Marcos some five years ago and turned it into a niche manufacturer that was winning wide acclaim and attracting the attention of the big names in the Auto media, including being a favourite of the Top Gear team.

“Regrettably, despite the extraordinary efforts of our employees, suppliers and dealers, we simply could not attain a profit point, reduce our cost base or raise the necessary capital to sustain the business” , said Tony Stelliga in the press release below.

Marcos derived its name from those of its founders, Jem Marsh and Frank Costin who established Marcos back in 1959. Marcos is no stranger to bankruptcy with the company going out of business twice previously, once in 1970 and then again in 2000.

One has to admire men like Tony Stelliga who are prepared to invest in one of the toughest businesses there is – small volume sports car manufacturing. I wonder who will be next to offer Marcos a chance at life. Maybe fourth time lucky...
