THE LOTUS EVORA, revealed at this year's Melbourne Motor Show has given us a glimpse of the future for the Lotus brand, and now the updated 2010 Exige S is available locally through Lotus Cars Australia.

On the functional styling front, Lotus? supercharged giant-killer features an updated front bumper, as well as a larger, carbon-fibre wing.

That new wing is some 181mm wider, 46mm higher, and 63mm further back than the current wing. The benefit? Downforce on the rear axle of 42kg at 160km/h.

The new front bumper is more about aerodynamics and cooling than about aesthetics. A larger centre air-intake feeds more air into the engine, flanked by two sizeable intakes to channel air to the twin oil-coolers.

The increased cooling capacity offered by the Exige S? facelift was vital to the car?s revised powertrain.

With the optional performance pack?s Magnuson/Eaton M62 supercharger, faster flowing injectors, a higher torque clutch system and a revised roof scoop to better feed the intercooler, power in the Exige S is boosted to 179kW (240hp) at 8000rpm.

Torque is also improved, up to 230Nm (170lb-ft) at 5500rpm.

In this setup, the Exige S can sprint to 60mph (96km/h) in 4.5 seconds on its way to a 233km/h (145mph) top speed.

Fuel economy receives a welcome improvement as well, at 9.1 l/100km.

Jonathan Stretton, General Manager at Lotus Cars Australia said: ?So far, over 5000 Exiges have been hand-built at our high-tech manufacturing facility making it a significant contributor to our global production.

The lightweight Exige has one of the highest specific power outputs of any globally emissions certified car and 107kW/litre is a perfect demonstration of Colin Chapman?s philosophy of performance through light weight and of Lotus? relentless pursuit of efficiency.

?The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient ? how many cars have performance figures of 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds but produce only 199g/km CO2??

Also included with the performance pack are 308mm AP Racing cross-drilled and ventilated discs under four-piston calipers, as well as an up-rated clutch plate and variable slip traction control.

You?ll also find the launch control system featured in the GT3 racing program, which allows drivers to select a specific engine RPM for standing starts, and adjust the level of traction control.

The updated 2010 Exige S is available now through Lotus Cars Australia, and pricing remains unchanged from the outgoing model, starting $114,990 plus dealer delivery and on-road costs.
