Unbelievably, it has been 40 years since Mazda introduced their first rotary engined vehicle. Launched in 1967, the Mazda Cosmo Sport (110S overseas) was the first to feature the high revving and highly strung little Wankel. The original rotaries made great power but had a prodigious thirst for oil and petrol. Mazda however, stayed the course and was able to develop the rotary into the high revving, reliable and comparatively efficient unit that today’s RX-8 owners know and love.

To celebrate 40 years of rotary power Mazda have cobbled together a unique limited-edition RX-8 sports coupe, that it will unveil at the Brisbane Motor Show on February 1. The Anniversary model RX-8, builds on the exclusivity inherent in the world's only rotary-powered sports car with performance and styling modifications designed to further enhance the RX-8's uniqueness.

The RX-8 Anniversary model features the award-winning RENESIS rotary engine, with 170kW of power and 211Nm of torque mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Exclusive limited-edition features extend to a unique leather and Alcantara* interior, leather wrapped steering wheel, gear shifter and handbrake handle, and specially-designed 40th Anniversary badging.

Exterior upgrades include high-gloss 18-inch alloy wheels, silver engine cover, a floating rear spoiler, sunroof and blue reflector fog-lamps. The enthusiastic driver will be pleased to note that Bilstein shock absorbers and a urethane foam-filled front suspension cross member are standard fitment on this limited edition.

Other standard features include a premium Bose® sound system, ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), traction control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), cruise control, power windows and mirrors, climate control air-conditioning and 6 airbags.

This is a genuine ‘limited edition’ with only 200 examples of the RX-8 Anniversary model being made available in Australia at this time, priced at $55,840 and loaded with additional features Mazda should have little trouble finding them all new homes.
