Lexus Considering Active Pedestrian Detection System For Australia

LEXUS AUSTRALIA is investigating the introduction of the brand's Active Pedestrian Detection System (APDS) into the local line-up.

Similar to Volvo's more advanced collision avoidance system, Lexus' APDS uses stereo cameras and infra-red technology to detect and monitor pedestrians and objects across the path of the vehicle.

If an object is detected, the system will alert the driver via audio signals and a warning light in the dash.

If the system detects no reaction from the driver, the APDS can initiate braking as the vehicle nears the object, as well as decreasing the steering ratio to increase the intensity and quickness of the steering response.

To protect the vehicle's occupants, the system will automatically pre-tension the front seatbelts in preparation for a collision.

"Lexus currently offers APDS in the United States and we are studying the introduction of the safety feature for the Australian market," Lexus Australia CEO John Roca said.

"Lexus has always been a technology leader and APDS just confirms our commitment to safety and technology.
