There can never be too many, and a name may never be too long: presenting Lamborghini's latest hi-po variant, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante.

Producing 425kW (570hp) and 540Nm, the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is a good 7kW stronger than the Gallardo LP 560-4, driven by the same 5.2 litre V10 powering the hardtop LP 570-4 Superleggera.

More, Lamborghini has pulled out all the stops on the weight-loss front, using an aluminium spaceframe to make the Spyder Performante a good 65kg lighter than the LP 560-4 Spyder - no small feat, given the neat for extra reinforcement suffered by all topless cars.

Carbon fibre was also used extensively both inside and out, making up around 40 percent of the loss that lead to its 1485kg kerb weight.

The V10 engine sends its power to all four wheels through Lamborghini's automated e-gear six-speed transmission as standard, although a 'regular' six-speed manual is also available - for the same price.

With a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is only a fraction of a section slower than the hardtop Superleggera, which covers the distance in 3.7 seconds - near enough that most will never know.

The two cars share a top speed of 325km/h, the same as the LP 560-4.

The Performante gets the same 19-inch wheels as the Superleggera, backed by 365mm vented discs up front and 356mm at the rear. Bigger 380mm carbon ceramic six-piston brakes figure on the options list.

Pricing and availability for the newest variant in the Lamborghini family has yet to be revealed.
