Comments from Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann this week suggest the eye-catching Estoque saloon concept that was unveiled at the Paris motor show in 2008 could be headed for production as soon as 2012.

"A third model would fit Lamborghini very well ... a four-door car would be a very feasible approach," Mr Winkelmann told financial paper Bloomberg this week.

Lamborghini owner Volkswagen will likely make its decision based on whether the Estoque's cost projections add up.

Speaking of the company's earlier plans to put the Estoque into production, Lamborghini’s head of research and development, Maurizio Reggiani explained that, if left unchanged, the Estoque would run the same all-wheel drive setup and 5.2L direct-injection V10 engine as the Gallardo.

Previous production plans saw the Estoque equipped with an all-new seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox, rather than the manual and 'E-Gear' transmissions currently on offer, to improve fuel economy and ensure the driving experience is of a standard befitting a high-calibre saloon.

Multiple engines were also under consideration for the Estoque, including a twin-turbo V8 a high-powered diesel. Reports in 2008 suggested Lamborghini had also been considering a hybrid-electric system for both petrol and diesel engines.

The Estoque concept was been built using a mix of Gallardo components and other Volkswagen-sourced parts.

With Porsche's Panamera (itself a corporate cousin to the Estoque) and Aston Martin's Rapide both now on the market, the Lamborghini Estoque looks to have its work cut out if it gets the go ahead.
