Not to be outdone by its partner Hyundai, Korean carmaker Kia has unveiled its Kia Sportage 'Mild Hybrid' concept at the Paris Auto Show.

Built on the same platform as Hyundai's ix35 and utilising the same technology as the ix35 Blue Drive Hybrid revealed at Paris this week, the Sportage Mild Hybrid is powered by the Hyundai-Kia 1.7 litre 'U2' turbodiesel engine.

Producing 85kW and 260Nm of torque on its own, the turbodiesel engine is mated to a small 5kW electric motor.

Combined with a number of basic aerodynamic modifications and low-rolling-resistance tyres, the Sportage Mild Hybrid lists a carbon emissions rating of just 117g/km - besting the 135g/km of its ix35 Hybrid sibling.

Like Hyundai, Kia has oddly chosen not to reveal details of the hybrid system's fuel consumption.

For Kia, the Sportage Mild Hybrid is not its first foray into alternative-drive vehicles, with last year's Forte (Cerato) LPi Hybrid and the Ray PHEV concept offering a look at what the Korean carmaker is toying with as it moves to enter the hybrid consumer market in the future.

Neither Hyundai nor Kia have announced plans to launch production versions of either of its hybrid crossovers.
