The new Grand Cherokee's place on the top rung at Jeep is set to be short-lived, with news this week that Chrysler is developing a new version of the famed Wagoneer.

Launched in 1963 as a 'full-sized' high-riding wagon available in both five- and three-door bodystyles, the Wagoneer was one of first players in the now-saturated luxury 4x4 market.

Although they're around, you won't see many of the classic Wagoneers in Australia - and a quick search of the classifieds will show that no owners are prepared to let them go.

Little is known about Fiat and Chrysler's plans for the new Grand Wagoneer - a name the model took on in the early 1980s - although CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed this week that it will be built on a version of the Grand Cherokee platform.

Speaking at the Detroit Motor Show, Marchionne added that "it's time we gave the market an upper-scale Grand Wagoneer."
