Eagle-eyed carspotters have exposed what could be a new addition to the F-Type coupe and convertible range, with a four-cylinder prototype recently spied undergoing testing.

How do we know it’s got just four cylinders under the bonnet?

Running the prototype’s number plates through the UK government’s DVLA database reveals the car is registered as having a 2000cc petrol engine, and with Jaguar’s existing engine range only having four-cylinder motors of that size it’s reasonable to assume there are just four - not six or eight - pots inside this Jag.

Currently the least-powerful engine offered in the F-Type range is a 250kW/450Nm 3.0 litre supercharged V6, with a higher-output version of that motor available in the F-Type S and a 5.0 litre supercharged V8 sitting above that.
