UPDATE April 3rd 2009: Official details and images are here.

We reported earlier this afternoon about a rumour getting around that Subaru would be unveilling the production version of the new Legacy/Liberty at the New York Motor Show, and now these new images have surfaced online.

Purportedly a look at the next generation Outback and Legacy versions, you’d be forgiven for thinking someone had simply taken the face of the Legacy concept and ‘photoshopped’ it onto the back two thirds of the upcoming Subaru Exiga.

And while there are obvious similarities between this illustration and the Exiga – the high belt line and the wrap-around tail light design in particular – there are differences as well.

The flared wheel arches on these concepts are far more prominent and defined than those on the Exiga, and the Outback version features that trademark grey/black trim running along the bottom edge of the car and the wheel guards.

The fog lights in the front bumper of the Outback are also markedly different to the more stylised versions on the Legacy Concept, or even those of the current model Outback.  The same can be said for the side intakes and fog lights of the Legacy wagon concept.

Of course, another question – assuming this artwork is the real deal – is: what about the rumoured changes to the design of the face of the car?  If this is the real Outback and Legacy wagon, it would seem Subaru are sold on those headlights and that grille after all.

Whatever the case, we’ll know one way or the other, come the New York Motor Show.  That is, if it shows at all!
