HYUNDAI HAS CONFIRMED at a press conference in the US today that it will introduce a new coupe in 2011 as a successor to the Tiburon.

Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik, while quiet on specific details, confirmed that the coupe's styling would be heavily influenced by the Hyundai Veloster concept revealed at the 2007 Seoul Auto Show.

Mr Krafcik said the coupe would draw "up to 80 percent" of its styling language from the sporty Veloster.

Krafcik has confirmed in the past that the new coupe, the final name of which has yet to be finalised, will feature styling unlike anything before it.

“It might be doors or a unique roof or something with the hatch. But it won’t be like anything out there before in the small car segment,” he said.

The new coupe will be powered by a 105kW 1.6 litre petrol engine, utilising Hyundai's recently announced GDI direct injection technology.

Fuel consumption is expected to be around 5.8 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The new Hyundai coupe was previously believed to be built on the Elantra platform. Krafcik has since confirmed that the new coupe is “Accent-sized.” Whichever platform it uses, like its Tiburon predecessor, it will be front-wheel-drive only.

A "well-placed" source within Hyundai reportedly told British outlet Autocar in July that the carmaker will be tooling up its production facilities to build the upcoming Tiburon replacement in right-hand-drive, making Australia a likely destination.

Little else is known at this point, but more details will likely be revealed over the coming year.
