Hyundai's upcoming Veloster sports car may have the styling to make it a seller, but its relatively low engine output appears to have polarised pundits.

However, if the 102kW 1.6 litre engine in Hyundai's second new sports model isn't enough for some, there may be a 'fix' on the horizon. According to reports overseas this week, a turbo-charged variant will join the European line-up later this year.

As for numbers, the top-shelf turbo version of the Veloster is being reported as producing a Golf GTI-rivalling 155kW, utilising a turbocharged version of the direct-injected 1.6 litre engine powering the regular model.

With Hyundai's Genesis Coupe available with a 160kW turbo-charged version of the company's older 2.0 litre Theta engine, a turbo-charged Veloster will likely follow an engine update for the rear-wheel-drive Coupe hero.

Australia

With the reported turbo-charged Veloster yet to get an official announcement, an Australian launch remains pure speculation. In the meantime, Hyundai Australia's Ben Hershman has confirmed that the regular Veloster will make its local debut later this year.
