The unearthing of new 2011 models continues today with the online unveiling of Hyundai's upcoming i45 and 2011 Elantra-based wagon - known internally as the 'VF' and reported overseas as the i40W.

Hinted at last year during the local 2010 Santa Fe launch, and more recently spied testing in heavy camouflage on European roads, Hyundai's new wagon was designed and developed at the company's German R&D centre.

The new wagon is understood to be built on a version of the platform used by the larger i45 sedan, which offers a wheelbase exactly 95mm longer than the 'MD' sedan.

Engine options for the Korean and European versions of the new wagon are expected to include Hyundai's new 1.7 litre CRDI diesel engine, offered in 85kW and 100kW forms.

A more powerful 130kW version of the engine will reportedly join the line-up later in 2011, matched to a new dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new 'VF' or 'i40W' will make its debut the Geneva Auto Show in March 2011.

Australia

An Australian debut for Hyundai's new mid-size wagon has not been confirmed (Hyundai has not yet confirmed details internationally either).

Despite this, It is believed that the wagon will be sold alongside the i45 - with similar trim and engine options - to give Hyundai a sorely-needed competitor against the wagon versions of the Mazda6, Ford Mondeo and Subaru Liberty.

Speaking with TMR today, Hyundai Australia's Ben Hershman could say only that it is too early to confirm if any plans exist for the new wagon.
