Kia has reportedly confirmed development of an all-new model line which will feature a hydrogen fuel cell version.

Speaking to Britain’s Autocar magazine ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, Kia’s European marketing boss Artur Martins pointed to an all-new model which is larger than the just-launch Stinger four-door sedan.

He said this vehicle would be offered with internal combustion engines, hybrid and electric motors as well as the hydrogen fuel cell version.

Kia did announce plans for a standalone fuel cell vehicle back in 2014 but did not elaborate on vehicle type.

Internationally Kia has a fuel cell vehicle – the Borrego FCEV SUV which is a sibling of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell SUV (pictured, below).

However this all-new vehicle will be designed from the ground up for fuel cell operation.

As seen with the Toyota Mirai, fuel cell vehicles have specific needs for cooling and these are best achieved with a ‘clean-sheet’ design approach.

“It is not clear what kind of bodystyle the cars will have, but it will be dedicated models rather than using an existing donor car as we do now with the ix35,” Kia’s duel cell chief Dr Sae-Hoon Kim revealed.

Kia says its next-generation hydrogen fuel stack will be around 15 per-cent lighter, more compact - similar proportions to a 2.0-litre internal combustion engine – and 10 per-cent more powerful. Top speed will be at least 170km/h and range between refueling will be 500kms.

Autocar speculates the all-new Kia Sorento, due within two years, could also be a candidate for hydrogen fuel cell application.
