REPORTS ARE CIRCULATING in the Japanese media that Honda will take the wraps off an all-new battery-electric concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.

According to the Nikkei business daily, Honda plans to introduce an all-electric passenger vehicle to the American market in 2015, and is expected to unveil a concept version of the car at this year's Tokyo show.

A spokesman from Honda confirmed that the company is developing an electric car, but would not be drawn on its market introduction date or whether a prototype would be exhibited at Tokyo.

With competitors Nissan, Mitsubishi and Subaru all working to bring their own EVs to market within the first half of the next decade, Honda developing its own all-electric production model would seem a reasonable move.

The Japanese automaker has traditionally favoured petrol-electric hybrids and hydrogen vehicles such as the FCX Clarity as its preferred method of eco-friendly transport, believing current battery technology to be incapable of delivering a usable range for a multi-purpose passenger car.

However, the company recently revised its stance on plug-in hybrids, paving the way for a more battery-reliant range of vehicles to be introduced.

Not much is known at this stage about Honda's rumoured EV, but odds are high that it will be a small car designed to go head to head with the upcoming Nissan LEAF and the Mitsubishi i MiEV.
