As the January '09 Detroit Motor Show draws near, the inevitable leaks concerning some of the show's stars continue to build momentum. Today we've come across a few pages from the sales brochure of the 2009 Honda Insight.

From the looks of it, the Toyota Prius is going to have some stiff competition.

The Insight will be offered in three trim levels, G, L, and LS, the latter being a sporty variant (pictured above) that features Modulo body components. Reports indicate that there may also be a paddle-shifted CVT, as well as a satellite navigation system boasting a seven-inch screen on the options list.

While it may look sporty, the Insight's 65kW petrol and 10kW electric engines are geared only for efficient A-to-B commuting, scintillating performance should not be an expectation. The claimed 4.0 l/100km fuel economy and expected price advantage over Toyota's Prius, could well make the Honda a formidable opponent for Toyota's hybrid all-star.

Falling fuel prices will impact on the sales of hybrid vehicles in the short-term. However, despite this, the hybrid/electric vehicle market segment is becoming more interesting by the day as more companies rush to produce vehicles and lock in their share of the 'green' market.

More competition will mean better vehicles in our driveways and possibly more money in our pockets. We all like the sound of that.
