Honda has announced that its hydrogen-fuelled FCX Clarity is now available for lease in Japan, making that nation the second country to be gifted with the zero-emissions wondercar that many say foretells the future of motoring.

Currently only available to corporations and government entities, the FCX's Japanese expansion is part of Honda's plan to release 200 Claritys into the wild across both Japan and the United States over the next three years.

Will we see it come to Australia? Not for the time being, says Honda Australia's Senior Director Lindsay Smalley, citing Australia's distinct lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure as the primary limitation.

The FCX Clarity makes its power by combining hydrogen with oxygen to create electricity, which is then stored in batteries and delivered to a 100kW electric motor that drives the front wheels.

The only thing that comes out of the Clarity's tailpipe is pure, drinkable water, and, provided the hydrogen used to fuel it is compressed using green energy, then the whole shebang is virtually emissions-free. Not only that, but Honda says the FCX Clarity is also twice as efficient as a petrol-electric hybrid and around three times as efficient as a normal petrol-powered car.

Now, if only you could buy one for keeps...
