Holden Sportwagon will not be heading to the States

GM’s chairman, Bob Lutz has confirmed that the Holden VE Sportwagon will not be a starter in the Pontiac line-up. The first of the production Pontiac G8’s (Holden VE Commodore sedans) began rolling off Holden’s Adelaide assembly line in December of 2007 and speculation has been rife that the Sportwagon and Ute would eventually be added to the North American export list as well.

According to Lutz, there were a number of issues, including the cost of meeting US regulations and more importantly the fact that wagons do not sell well in the States. Lutz confirms that he has long been an advocate of a Pontiac G8 Sportwagon but the predicted sales volumes were just not enough to make it a worthwhile proposition.

There is no word on whether this decision will effect the possible export of the VE based Ute, however the strong Australian dollar must be forcing GM to take a second look.
