After 60 years of manufacturing, 'Team Lion' has rolled out vehicle number 7,000,000 - a 60th anniversary Commodore - and, in doing so, Holden has created automotive history in Australia. As if to highlight the ever-increasing demand for alternative fuel options, the milestone family sedan will come equipped with Holden's factory-fitted LPG option.

Holden's South Australian assembly plant in Elizabeth welcomed the Premier of South Australia, Mike Rann; Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr; and GM Holden’s Executive Director – Manufacturing, Rod Keane, to help celebrate the impressive achievement.

Mr Keane was understandably pleased but noted that Holden will need to continue efforts to stay successful.

“This is a proud day for every one of GM Holden’s 6500 employees in Australia. It says so much about us as one of this country’s largest manufacturing operations and most trusted brands. The next chapter in our history will see us delivering a wide range of energy solutions to meet varying consumer needs and budgets. I believe manufacturing the next million vehicles will be one of the most dynamic periods of GM Holden’s rich history,” he said

Aside from LPG, there are other fuel initiatives taking place under the GM banner. Diesel and ethanol feature on the list. Even Saab has a hand in ethanol development, while Active Fuel Management is planned for introduction on some locally-built Holden V8 models - not a minute too soon.

As Holden continues to evolve, the flexibility of the Elizabeth assembly plant will prove to be even more beneficial. At present 43 models off six variants, including left and right hand drive configurations, are produced locally with almost 50% pegged for export markets. Total exports since Holden began exporting in 1954, now numbers 800,000 vehicles .

With 7,000,000 vehicles produced and a keen eye on the market, Holden should be well placed to soldier on to vehicle number 8,000,000. That's a bit of a ways off yet, so take a look back and see how the milestones have come about.
