With fuel prices hitting motorists hard in the hip pocket, GM Holden has announced some welcome news for Commodore buyers. Private buyers can now buy dual fuel LPG-powered Holden Commodores for as little as $400 more than their petrol equivalents.

The super cheap price is the direct result of GM Holden reducing the recommended retail pricing on all its new LPG Commodores by $1500. Combine that with the fact that eligible private buyers are entitled to the Federal Government’s current rebate of $2000, and yes, you can for the grand total of $400 chose a dual-fuel Commodore over the standard petrol model.

Or, as Holden will tell you, "Australian families can access all the comfort, performance and practical advantages of a large car, at annual fuel costs comparable to popular petrol-only small cars".

“With this further incentive from Holden, and continuing support from the Federal Government through its LPG rebate scheme, Australians now have another cost-effective option available to them when choosing their next family or business vehicle.”

A saving of this magnitude effectively makes the dual-fuel Commodore a serious option for buyers who don't necessarily travel large kilometres each year. Holden estimate that a motorist covering 20,000kms per year will recoup the cost of the $400 outlay for a dual-fuel sedan, within the space of just four months.

Holden’s dual-fuel Alloytec V6 engine is available on VE Omega, Berlina and 60th Anniversary sedan models, as well as the VE Omega ute and produces 175kW @ 6000 rpm (petrol 180kW @ 6000 rpm) and 325Nm @ 2600 rpm (petrol 330Nm @ 2600 rpm).

In sedan applications, the 73 litre cylindrical LPG tank is located under the parcel shelf in the boot. Dual-fuel Ute buyers lose a little cargo space with a 74 litre cylindrical tank being fitted in the cargo tray with a modified tub liner. Both variants retain their existing 73 litre petrol tank.

Holden’s LPG unit is an advanced Sequential Vapour Gas Injection (SVGI) system, which injects gas directly into the engine, mimicking the petrol injection sequence. It has automatic changeover to LPG via cylinder-by-cylinder activation and provides an automatic change back to petrol at low LPG levels.

As the dual fuel system has been designed, engineered and safety tested by Holden, it is covered by Holden’s three-year/100,000km new vehicle warranty.

All vehicle safety systems are also retained including Electronic Stability Control as standard on both sedan and ute models.

LPG and petrol fillers are combined under the existing fuel filler cap and there is a separate LPG fuel gauge. Service intervals remain unchanged and Holden point out that there is little difference to service costs, with an LPG vapour filter requiring replacement every 15,000kms, and a liquid filter every 120,000kms.

In Western Australia, there is an additional $1000 in State Government subsidies available for the fitment of LPG systems to vehicles, making the dual-fuel option cheaper than the dedicated petrol alternative.
