Holden has today announced the opening of its new body shop at its Elizabeth plant in Adelaide, commissioned to produce panels for the locally-built 2011 Holden Cruze sedan.
The announcement comes just weeks after the launch of the VE Series II Commodore and mere days ahead of the Holden Barina Spark's unveiling this weekend.
"[The local Cruze] is the beginning of a new era for Holden, adding a new global small car to our local portfolio,” Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said today.
“With Cruze and Commodore we have the flexibility to meet the changing demands of the market and to offer our customers a family of great locally made small and large cars.”
Along with the design of the plant itself, the new facility features systems and processes designed by the production team at Elizabeth, drawing on the group's experience in previous development projects - including the hero Monaro.
“This gave employees much greater input to the program and it’s fantastic to see it all come together,” Mr Devereux said.
Equipment at the new body shop includes 22 new robots and 48 refurbished and retooled robots, designed not only for Cruze production but also for future global GM programmes.
The roof, body sides, closures, fascias and majority of interior plastics for the Cruze will be produced at the new plant, before joining the Commodore on the line in General Assembly.
The Cruze is set to be the only locally-built small car in Australia. The Cruze hatchback - revealed early last month - will make its debut on the company's assembly line later in 2011.
