Usually, at the first sign of trouble the rumour-mill goes into overdrive. No-one knows this better right now than General Motors. The condition of the car maker?s finances and future - in both the US and Europe - has been given unprecedented attention and press speculation.

In an attempt to counter the spread of misinformation, GM Europe has set up a ?Facts and Fiction? website for its Opel and Vauxhall brands.

The site addresses popular myths, rumours and urban legends surrounding GM?s European operations. Hot topics such as rumoured profit siphoning from Opel, North American mismanagement, the Opel and Vauxhall viability plan are all addressed.

?There is some fair and informed reporting supported by facts but unfortunately there is also misinformation, uninformed opinion, myths and urban legends that we read and hear? GM?s Eurpoean Director of Communications, Denis Chick said.

?To encourage fact-based reporting and informed discussion we have launched a site where we list some of the more popular myths and answer them with facts.?

The follows a formula set up in a similar site established for the US market. Despite the promise to deliver facts, free from propaganda and hyperbole, neither site answers the question of how long GM expects to survive (but, yes, we've become more than a tad cynical).
