Despite the best efforts of various governments, minority groups and as Jeremy Clarkson would say, ?bearded folk?, our love affair with the car continues to gain momentum. Track days throughout Europe are a burgeoning business as keen drivers head to the relative safety of the track to satisfy their need for speed.

Of course, there is one place in Europe that is considered the holy grail for petrolheads, car enthusiasts, racers and even spy photographers and that?s the Nordschleife or as we more commonly refer to it the Nurburgring. Situated in N?rburg, Germany, and built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of N?rburg, it was nicknamed the Green Hell by Jackie Stewart and is considered arguably, the ultimate tarmac test of man and machine.

All very serious really, which is why it?s a little surprising to learn that developers are looking at using the famous circuit as a site for a theme park? Now, before you go getting all hot under the collar, this will not be a theme park filled with dodgem cars and fairy floss vendors, it will be a theme park whose theme is speed!

According the folks over at AutoBild, the main attraction will be a new type of high-speed rollercoaster. You?ll enter the ride near the famous start/finish line and with the power of compressed air you and another seven passengers will be rocketed down a 480 metre straight running parallel to the track, hitting a speed of 217km/h/135mph. You?ll reach that speed in just two and half seconds, meaning you?ve just accelerated faster than any car that is likely to take to the track short of home made, jet powered land speed record contender, whose run would end in tragedy at the first corner.

At the end of the straight run, the roller coaster will make a left turn and head back to start/finish line along the ?the boulevard?. The roller coaster/jet-sled will likely be the star attraction in a redevelopment plan that also includes a 5,000 seat grandstand and four-star hotel. Sounds like the perfect setting for a weekend away.
