Quiet rightly feared by its competition at the moment, Audi is currently working on two sports orientated variants of its successful small coupe the TT.

Carupdate has learnt that the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder currently seen making 188kW (252hp) in the current S3 will be used for the TT-S model, while a new turbocharged 2.3-litre five-cylinder 'VR5' engine will be worthy of the RS nameplate making around 270kW (365hp).

The VR5 sounds simlar to Volvo's in line five-cylinder unit, currently found in the Focus XR5, only Audis VR5 will make much more power.

Both models will be sold with Audi?s quattro all wheel drive system. At the moment the current TT is available with either a 150kW (200hp) 2.0-litre four-cylinder FSI or a 186kW (250hp) 3.2-litre V6 with 6 speed manual and auto gear boxes.

A hardtop convertible version of the current model will be available in showrooms soon, and we understand a TDI diesel variant is in development.
