If you're one of the privileged few lucky enough to be rolling around in a Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster, it's doubtful the thought, "Is this car powerful enough?" has ever entered your mind.

With 467kW bellowing from its 5.4-litre supercharged V8, the SLR Roadster is far from being just a pose-mobile for vapid, image-obsessed heiresses. And if you call it a hairdresser's car the odds are high that it'll leap at your face, claws extended, and scoop out your eyeballs.

Still, rich people are megalomaniacs, so to satisfy their ever-increasing thirst for power, Mercedes-Benz has decided to release the even-gruntier 722 S version of the drop-top supercar, which goes on sale at the start of January next year.

With 485kW and 820Nm of torque emanating from a highly-tuned version of the standard SLR's engine, the 722 S Roadster certainly packs a hefty punch. The 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in a lightning-fast 3.7 seconds (a mere tenth behind the standard SLR hardtop); 200kph arrives in 10.6 seconds and top speed is 335kph.

Handling is improved by a set of harder and lower springs, while the shock absorbers have been revalved to improve grip. There are also 19-inch lightweight wheels and special "722 S" badging to denote that this is no ordinary SLR, while a carbon-fibre bodykit does as much to improve aerodynamics as it does to improve aesthetics.

Racing bucket seats trimmed in Alcantara and leather flaunt special "722 S" emblems, while the gear knob and parking brake are covered in grippy suede. The steering wheel is also trimmed in a combination of Alcantara and leather, and carbon-fibre covers every surface that's not wrapped in cowhide.

Pricing for the uber-convertible has yet to be announced, however expect more news on M-B's latest iteration of the SLR to surface closer to the end of the year. Get your trust funds ready, kids.
