Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) has taken a step into the future, relying solely on the virtues of computer animation to promote its new FG Falcon-based performance range on television.  Could it also be a clever attempt at skirting the rules when it comes to depicting reckless driving in televised advertisements?

FPV says the use of CGI has allowed the company to explore new dimensions in the way an automotive commercial could be approached, using an open desert-like scene with no roads and plenty of space—a scenario difficult to arrange in the real world without confronting various hurdles.

“To manage such a production with eight cars and a production crew would be an extremely consuming and costly exercise and besides, the vehicles were in production at the time,” said FPV General Manager, Rod Barrett.

The vehicles shown in the commercial, which range from the Territory through to the sedans and utes, were all built in CGI directly from the CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) data used in the development of the real vehicles themselves.

“We rarely use television to advertise our brand and to be able to use this technology in the way we have is extremely advantageous,” said Barrett.

“The result was a more flexible shoot, no large crew, no weather contingency, and the freedom to choreograph the shots, choose our own weather conditions, rehearse the shots and then produce the finished television commercial.”

The commercial, produced by Magnum Opus and CGI team Airbag Productions, will premier on pay TV this Sunday the 6th of July on Fox Sports, Sky News, Fox Sports News, Discovery, and the History Channel, and will be followed by free-to-air coverage during the Seven Network's coverage of the V8 Supercar series.
