CURRENTLY SITTING on a 4-Star ANCAP Crash Safety Rating, the Ford Territory is expected to achieve the top 5-Star score early next year.

When production resumes on January 11, the Territory range will be fitted with an audible front passenger seatbelt warning - the single factor keeping the still strong-selling wagon from gaining the top ANCAP score.

According to previous ANCAP tests, the Territory has been on the verge of a 5-Star rating since its introduction in 2004, held back only by the absence of an audible passenger seatbelt warning as standard fitment.

Stability control - soon to be mandatory across Australia - has been standard on all-wheel-drive models since the SX model launched in 2004, and since 2008 with the rear-wheel-drive models.

The SYII update earlier this year saw the inclusion of curtain airbags as standard across the range.

Safety features already standard included ABS brakes and Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), dual front airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners and side airbags.

The audible seatbelt warning to be added to the passenger seat in 2010 is already standard fitment in the driver's seat.

The Territory's predicted rise to a 5-Star rating next year will follow the 5-Star safety rating awarded to the FG Falcon in August last year.
