Ford Mondeo EcoBoost Launched In Europe, Australian Debut Unclear

WHILE THE Australia Mondeo line-up saw a significant update less than one year ago, the mid-size sedan has this week been launched in Europe with Ford's 2.0 litre turbo-charged four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine.

Equipped with a six-speed PowerShift double-clutch automatic transmission as standard, the EcoBoost-powered Mondeo offers 151kW of power and 300Nm of torque.

In Australia, the Mondeo's petrol engines include the 118kW/208Nm 2.3 litre Duratec four-cylinder, and the XR5 Turbo's 162kW/320Nm 2.5 litre Duratec five-cylinder.

With the EcoBoost engine under the bonnet (the same one slated to appear in the Falcon), the European Mondeo can sprint to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds with fuel consumption listed at 7.7 l/100km. By comparison, Ford's Duratec engines return fuel consumption figures of around 9.5 l/100km.

Whether we'll see the engine in the Australian line-up remains to be seen. Ford Australia's Justin Lacy told TMR today that while it isn't out of the question, he could not comment on future product plans.

"Certainly you could draw a line between what's offered in Europe and what's offered in Australia and speculate on whether the update will appear locally, but there are more than a few engine options offered in Europe that don't come to Australia," Mr Lacy said.

With Ford Australia set to launch its four-cylinder Falcon next year, powered by the same 2.0 litre turbo-charged EcoBoost engine, we're unlikely to see further updates to the Mondeo range before then.
