The on again off again Ford Focus RS is well…on again. The folks at Car Magazine have managed to snap a Focus RS test mule as it finished a few hot laps of the Nurburgring earlier this week. If it really is on again then Car Magazine are of the opinion that Ford will unveil an RS concept at the Geneva motor show, alongside their new look Focus (see last picture in this article).

It is expected that the new Focus RS will debut around the middle of 2008 and it will be sporting the new look Focus sheet-metal when it does, suitably enhanced with larger wheels and bodykit to differentiate it from its lesser brethren.

Ford still deny that they are working on an RS but Car Magazine’s sources suggest it will come equipped with a 2.5-litre five cylinder turbo (as seen in our local Focus XR5) but substantially reworked and running through a close-ratio six speed gearbox and an AWD system courtesy of Volvo.

The uprated engine is expected to provide a feisty 225Kw or so and 380Nm of twist or as much as a 4.0-litre Falcon. Modifications to the engine will include a larger turbo and intercooler, oil cooler and strengthened conrods. The 0-100km/h dash should take little more than five seconds and a top speed of around 265km/h is estimated.

Kept to a simple formula and avoiding many of the electronic gadgets and gizmos such as DSG or an adjustable AWD system it is suggested that the Focus RS will be keenly priced. The Focus RS will no doubt prove to be a well credentialed addition to what is fast becoming a hot hatch golden age. A literal smorgasbord of choice is available now or on the near horizon. Renault Megane Sport...Golf R32...WRX STi...HSV VRX and possibly a Ford Focus RS. If it really is on again.
