DESPITE RUMOURS and reports online in the past week, Ford Australia has confirmed to TMR today that the Falcon is not on its way to the US.

A recent announcement that Ford North America is developing a successor to the ubiquitous Crown Victoria - sold largely as a law enforcement vehicle - was rapidly followed by suggestions that it would be based on Australia's Ford Falcon.

Some online sources had suggested that, rather than pushing the popular US-market Taurus, Ford would look to emulate GM's Holden Statesman-based plan by using the rear-wheel-drive architecture of its Australian arm.

However, speaking with TMR today, Ford Australia Product Communications Manager Justin Lacy pointed to Ford North America's announcement that its new pursuit vehicle would be engineered and built in the US.

"The new Police Interceptor is to be engineered and built in the US, which indicates it is a US-only program. Ford Australia is not involved with the announcement of the new Police Interceptor," Mr Lacy said.

It doesn't get much clearer than that.
