Finally Named: Meet the Pontiac G8 ST

After months of work and 18,000 odd customer-submitted suggestions, Pontiac has finally named our Holden Ute as the Pontiac G8 ST. Inventive, huh? Sifting through 18,000 submissions is no easy task on its own, but then each possibility had to be checked and cleared for trademark infringement before the 'ST' moniker was finally selected.

Perhaps even more interesting than the actual name selected is the name they did not select: sentimental favourite 'El Camino'. Craig Bierley, BPG product marketing director for cars and crossovers explained;

“We actually thought very long about El Camino. In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honour the El Camino’s unique place as part of Chevy’s heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac.”

Powered by the same 270kW 6.0L V8 used locally, the G8 ST will be offered in automatic only, but will feature Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) to provide some of the best performance and fuel efficiency ratings of any vehicle in its class. We've been crying out for the same technology here, so hopefully Holden might jump on the bandwagon.

While the news has generated plenty of excitement there's a still a long wait before the G8 ST hits dealers in late 2009. So until then, the gallery images will have to suffice.
