REPORTS CIRCULATING this morning suggest that popular UK automotive variety show Fifth Gear has been cancelled, however no official announcement has been made.

Launched after the short-lived cancellation of Top Gear in 2001,  Fifth Gear grew to become a popular alternative to the reborn Top Gear series - although perennially in 'second place' to the rampant Clarkson.

Despite drawing a up to one million viewers during its final season, Fifth Gear, an expensive production without the benefit of the BBC's budget, was unable to break into the Five Network's top 30 shows.

While the buzz online has Fifth Gear drawing to a close (there is no official confirmation), presenter Johnny Smith said via his Twitter page this morning that the show isn't over.

“Thanks to everyone for your compliments and words of encouragement. Remember, FG isn’t OFFICIALLY finished. Don’t (ever?) believe The Mail,” Smith wrote.
