Aside from being the world's most challenging racetrack and the venue for one of the most demanding 24-hour endurance races ever, the Nurburgring is also the epicentre of development for some of the world's most desirable performance cars. It's where many automakers send their prototypes to gather data and perform suspension, chassis and engine tuning, and such distinguished machinery as the Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R and Pagani Zonda all had their genesis at the 'Ring.

While Ferrari prefers to spend much of its R&D time at its Fiorano and Mugello circuits, it still travels to the Nurburgring to conduct pre-launch shakedowns of its various supercars. Now it appears that Ferrari is set to kick its Nurburgring presence up a notch with the opening of a track-side facility that will help spread the Prancing Horse brand further beyond the borders of its Italian homeland.

From what we can gather from Auto Motor und Sport's report, Ferrari's new home at the 'Ring is just one small part of a wider revamp of the Nurburging site. While Ferrari's corner of the new facility is likely to consist of a showroom and merchandise store, there also appears to be plans to incorporate some kind of Ferrari-branded rollercoaster into the building (below).

Ferrari-coaster aside, the rest of the Nurburgring renovations definitely look worthy of a visit by anyone planning on making the pilgrimage to the legendary circuit. There's plans for an indoor motocross track, a Nordschliefe lap simulator and an automotive science museum with what appears to be a giant Chevy small-block that visitors can walk into. Nothing keeps the kids entertained like an enormous American V8, right?.

The Nurburgring renovations are expected to be completed sometime in 2009.
