A LEAKED PATENT application lodged by Ferrari last month revealed that the Italian supercar manufacturer may be developing a hybrid powertrain.

This would be a first for the company, not only for its hybrid-drive, but also for the all-wheel-drive platform outlined in the application - a technology Ferrari has so far opted to leave out of its thoroughbred supercars.

Now, in a recent interview with US magazine Car and Driver, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa has revealed that a hybrid all-wheel-drive Ferrari will appear at an upcoming motor show.

While Felisa ruled out Frankfurt, he said the new Ferrari would appear "shortly after [the Frankfurt show], probably at an American show".

With the LA Auto Show in November being the last motor show on the American calendar for 2009, it would seem the most likely destination for Ferrari's hybrid.

Ferrari has yet to reveal whether the hybrid powertrain will be shown in an existing model or as an all-new concept.

Ferrari's patent application outlines six different configurations, each delivering power to the front wheels via a lithium-ion-powered electric motor, while a petrol engine motivates the rear wheels.
