It?s not often that a diminutive Renault driven by a 76 year old can bring the latest V12 Ferrari to its knees. Overnight reports suggest that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has parked his 599 GTB into the rear of a 76 year-olds Renault at about 100kmh...thankfully there are no reported injuries. The accident occurred in Switzerland on Friday last week.
One report suggests that the driver of the Renault braked suddenly causing Marchionne to hit the back of the Renault. The Ferrari?s airbags deployed which obscured Marchionne?s vision causing him to lose control and wind-up colliding with the crash barrier.
In fairness, little is known about the accident but given Ferraris have the benefit of some of the best braking hardware in the world, any rear-ender is questionable. Odds are it was a lapse of concentration or driving too fast on a winding road with obscured vision.
Unfortunately, reports indicate that the once beautiful 599 GTB is a write-off.
