Emergency Service Concept Car gives glimpse of the future

Want to know what the future of law enforcement has in store for the average Aussie driver? Well, here it is, Robo-Cop-Commodore an Emergency Service Concept Car cobbled together by the folks at Holden, Motorola and the Monash University Accident Research Centre.

It makes use of a variety of technologies to keep motorists in line and suitably fined if they are not playing ball. A license plate reading camera is able to process between 5,000 and 8,000 license plates over a 10 hour period and there are three other cameras to ensure that the boys in blue have everything possible covered.

One interesting technology is the ability to talk over another car’s audio system, which could be quite a shock for the dreamy lane hog who hasn’t noticed the police cruiser in their rear-view...but will be far safer than chasing cars down and trying to attract their attention. If all else fails there is always the ability to fire a GPS dart at the offending vehicle via the “Starcatch” system and follow them at leisure.

The Emergency Services Concept Car was created due to apparent overheating issues in current vehicles, which struggle to deal with the equipment they are required to haul. The fitting of one central computer fixed this problem and also opened the door to the fitment of the above mentioned technologies.

Will the Robo-Cruiser make it from concept to reality? Maybe not but if you think the technologies showcased won’t find their way into the average police car over the coming years then think again...
