Australian rising star Daniel Ricciardo has extended his lead in the British Formula 3 International Series after winning his third race of the season in Silverstone overnight.

The 19-year old drove a patient race, sitting behind team mate Max Chilton after starting from second on the grid before making a move with three laps remaining.

Ricciardo swept past Chilton around Stowe corner, capitalising on gearbox issues which slowed his fellow Carlin driver to win by two seconds.

"We stayed in formation for most of the race. Max's first few laps were good and he pulled a gap," Ricciardo said.

"Then I started to feel a bit more comfortable with the car and I saw Max have a few problems, a bit of oversteer, and with a few laps to go I managed to get alongside him through the fast Maggotts/Becketts section and got the run on him down the straight."

The disappointment compounded for Chilton only one lap later, losing second place to fellow Briton Riki Christodoulou.

Ricciardo finished fifth in the opening race of the weekend, bouncing back from an error in qualifying that left him languishing 11th on the grid to cross the chequered flag only five seconds behind race winner Renger van der Zande.

Driving a Dallara-Volkswagen, Ricciardo made a stunning start, jumping to seventh place by the first turn before continuing his charge to be fifth by lap three.

Showing stunning speed, the Red Bull backed driver then closed in on Christodoulou, but he was unable to find a way past the Fortec driver.
