EDAG – a worldwide provider of engineering services – has presented its 'Light Car–Open Source' concept at Geneva, and while it looks for the most part like any other whacky bubble concept, it’s actually quite a bit more.

EDAG has used a OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen across the back of the LCOS concept, designed to update fellow motorists about the conditions of the road and traffic ahead.

The body is made from a recyclable basalt fibre, which EDAG says is both lighter and cheaper than either carbon-fibre or aluminium.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Light Car–Open Source concept is the second half of its name: Open Source.

EDAG says it wants other companies and developers to feel free to work with the technology EDAG has created, so that it can be improved and honed into a genuinely useful automotive technology for the whole industry.

The LCOS concept uses lithium-ion batteries and electric motors in each wheel, offering great interior space thanks to the absence of a bulky engine or drivetrain system.

EDAG says that with the LCOS concept, it intends to demonstrate its credentials as an innovative partner to the automotive industry, and to stimulate new thinking on ways of satisfying consumer demands, both economically and ecologically.
