Looking to create a similar success story as the medium-sized Tucson SUV, the Kona enters the small SUV class with lower pricing and a youthful style aimed at attracting the attention of younger buyers.
In Australia Hyundai will offer the Kona with a three model range similar to that of the rest of its SUV lineup, opening with the entry-model Active, then progressing through Elite trim and topping out with the Highlander variant.
All three trim levels will be available with a choice of either naturally aspirated, or turbocharged petrol engines.
Rated at 110kW and 180Nm, the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is paired to a six-speed automatic that drives the front wheels, while the 130kW and 265Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that powers all four wheels.
Pricing for the base Active starts at $24,500 before on-roads in petrol guise and $28,000 before on-road costs for the turbo variant.
The Kona Active come with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, auto headlights, rear view camera with rear park assist, 7.0-inch touchscreen which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather trimmed steering wheel and a 3.5-inch digital instrument display as standard.
Higher-spec models also include key active safety features that aren’t a part of the Active’s standard equipment list, but for $1500 and optional Safety Pack adds autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist and driver attention warning.
The mid-spec Kona Elite, which costs $28,500 in petrol form and $32,000 when equipped with the turbo all-wheel drive setup. As well as the Safety Pack the Active also adds 17-inch alloy wheels, leather trimmed upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, front fog lights, auto wipers and grey exterior highlights.
As the range-topper the Kona Highlander starts from $33,000 for the petrol variant and $36,000 for the turbo.
Additional standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, front LED indicators, auto high beam. Head-up display, ventilated and heated front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless device charging and a 4.2-inch digital instrument display.
