One car lucky to weather the storm at the 'new' Chrysler Group - which partnered with Fiat last year to avoid collapse - is the Dodge brand's hero car, the Viper.

After cancellation last year of the fourth-generation Viper and very limited production through to July this year, Dodge boss Ralph Gilles has reportedly confirmed the Chrysler board's approval of a brand-new Viper.

Due to launch in 2012, according to The Detroit News, the new Viper will reportedly be built on its own unique platform, with Gilles putting to rest earlier speculation that the American muscle car would be based on Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione.

"There won't be a part of the car that remains untouched," Gilles said, and would apparently not rule out the potential for a brand-new V10 engine.

Late last year, Gilles confirmed that the new Viper would draw on the Alfa-owned Ferrari brand's knowledge, but would not use any of its technology.

"They really know sports cars. We just want some advice," Gilles said at the time. "Ferrari is Ferrari, Viper is Viper. Please don't go there."

Speaking with The Detroit News this week, Gilles confirmed that the new Viper will do away with its hard-to-tame reputation, adding modern control technology to boost its accessibility.

"Fiat has an awesome ability to tune cars. I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We've never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car."
