Richard Gryzch is a ‘get it done’ kind of guy. Fed up with waiting for the future to show up on showroom floors, Richard, from Arizona, went about building his own electric solar-powered motorbike.

Dubbed ‘The Solar Flyer’, he believes his bike is the first solar-powered electric motorbike in the world.

With a top speed of 145km/h (90mph) and a range of 80km (50 miles) off a full charge, the Solar Flyer is more than capable of fulfilling the needs of most urban motorcyclists.

"People look at me at the stop light and just say, 'What is that?’  I just shrug my shoulders and tell them, 'it's solar powered,” Gryzch said, speaking with Arizona’s ABC15.

"No gas, just hit the throttle and go," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine to build this bike."

It wasn’t a simple project. While Gryzch wouldn’t go into the technical details, he did admit that the project saw him sell a home and other motorbikes before it was completed.

It might not be as polished as the examples we’re starting to see the big manufacturers turn out, but it’s a DIY project to admire. Even better: Gryzch is working on a version with a 482km (300 mile) range.
