UK website Auto Express is claiming to have confirmed that MINI is planning to release an oil-burning version of its red-hot John Cooper Works MINI.

As diesel technology improves, it becomes a viable option for any manufacturer looking for solid performance with exceptional fuel economy and minimal emissions.

According to Auto Express, the JCW diesel MINI would use the same engine as seen in the Cooper D (pictured below).

Tuned for performance, the 1.6 litre engine would see output boosted from 82kW (110hp) and 240Nm (175 lb-ft) to around 120kW and substantially more torque.

With MINI's tuning division having recently unveiled the John Cooper Works Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show and the imminent arrival of the brands crossover SUV, it's action aplenty for the iconic British marque.

With plans still said to be on the drawing board, it's highly unlikely we'll see the diesel JCW MINI any time this year.

We'll bring you more information as it comes to light.
