Mercedes-Benz has announced it will join the steadily increasing number of manufacturers offering diesel engines in sport cars with the next generation SLK roadster.

In days gone by, placing the terms 'diesel' and 'sporty' would have made for an excellent oxymoron, but today's modern diesel engines, complete with particulate filters and direct-injection, are paving the way for greener motoring that delivers the performance enthusiasts require.

MB's 2.2-litre "BlueEfficiency" four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel, currently seeing duty in the C250 sedan, is the engine of choice and should quench the performance thirst while minimising that of the SLK. With over 150kWs and 500Nms on tap, the next-gen SLK should have ample punch to satisfy the masses and, with oil prices continuing to drop on world markets, won't punish owners at the pump.

Having spent a bit of time behind the wheel of Volkswagen's turbo-diesel Golf and loving it, we're more than happy for manufacturers to jump on the oil-burning bandwagon. Especially when there's 500Nms and a nimble roadster involved.
