All three companies are expected to be involved in the deal, with small cross-shareholdings exchanged as a symbolic representation of the alliance. Renault currently owns a 44.3 stake in Nissan, while the Japanese carmaker owns 15 percent of its French partner.

Renault and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has reportedly told Japan's Nikkei paper that he is open to an equity exchange across all three companies.

The deal is expected to see Daimler-owned Mercedes-Benz utilising Renault-Nissan's small car experise, while Renault and Nissan will benefit from Daimler's drivetrain technology.
