CRASH TEST groups from around the world, including members of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), met in Germany this week to explore opportunities for sharing crash test data and results.

The meeting between ANCAP and other NCAP groups follows discussions earlier this year on crash test regulations, which the Australian Automobile Association hopes will lead to a more comprehensive system for new vehicle safety listings, regardless of where the car is built or tested.

"It is hoped that the exchange of data will allow for crash tests to be more uniform and the results to be published in all markets," AAA Technical Services Director Craig Newland said in a statement.

Mr Newland said that, while achieving a unified international crash test system is considered "very difficult to achieve," the ultimate goal of the discussions is to explore each organisation's processes and see if - and how much - exchanging data will be feasible.

Any significant benefits are expected to be up to two years away, but Mr Newland said that the other NCAP organisations are interested, and some basic data has already been exchanged.
