Rising from the dead

Retro-themed reproductions of classics are it appears still all the rage amongst manufacturers. Witness the return of the Mini, VW Beetle and recently the Fiat 500. Now it’s Citroen’s turn and they have chosen to breathe life back into the old, famous and lovable relic called the 2CV.

Soon to be revived classic 2CV manages to combine classic and modern and do it well

It would seem to be perfect timing as well. With a world burdened by environmental issues and the price of oil up and rising what better car to revive than a small, cute and comparatively green Citroen 2CV.

The picture above gives you an idea of what to expect. Cuteness abounds but with a crisply modern twist on the original. The clam-shell slatted bonnet, flat sides and covered rear wheel wells instantly identify the new 2CV as a 2CV…until you look beneath the ‘plastic’ skin.

That’s right…plastic. We can expect the body panels of the new 2CV to be made from plastic in an effort to keep weight down and possibly provide some recycling benefits. Combine that with a hybrid diesel engine and you instantly have the new pin-up car for a generation of tree huggers.

The old original...

Which is not a bad thing. We do need to start looking after our world and cars such as this do make sense for people who do most of their driving in a city environment.

Unfortunately, the new Citroen 2CV is not likely to be the budget priced basic car that the original was which is a real shame. It will come standard with a fair swag of hi-tech gear including sat-nav and will be kitted out with ‘original 2CV’ inspired speedometer, thin rimmed steering wheel and the gear shift will be mounted in the dashboard per the original. Options will include a panoramic glass roof or a canvas top that can be rolled back.

The Citroen 2CV will be based on the current C3 and C4 hatch platform and is expected to slot into the range between the C3 and C4. There is no word yet on when production will begin.
