CHRYSLER 200

Chrysler has wasted no time in following up last week's teaser images, revealing today its US market 2011 Chrysler 200.

Set to replace the ageing Sebring, the mid-sized 200 was rumoured earlier this year to launch as the Nassau, although Chrysler has put those reports to bed with these images and details.

Despite the significant styling overhaul, the 200 is not an all-new model. Like Volkswagen's 2011 Passat, the Chrysler 200 is based on the outgoing Sebring - making the 200 more of an update, in body and in name.

Chrysler has still to offer full details for the 200, but as these photos show, the updated sedan draws its styling inspiration from the attractive 200C electric vehicle concept revealed in January last year.

Although interior photos have yet to be revealed, Chrysler promises a new instrument panel, new seats, acoustic laminated glass for better sound insulation and restyled vents.

The 200 will be powered by Chrysler's existing 2.4 litre inline four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a choice of four or six-speed automatic transmissions.

In Australia, the Sebring Cabrio is currently offered with a 2.7 litre V6 engine producing a significantly lower 137kW.

Chrysler's new family engine, the 209kW Pentastar V6 is also set to figure among the 200's powertrains, featuring in range-topping variants.

No unveiling date has been announced for the 200, but with a US-market debut set for the fourth quarter of this year, a November launch at the LA Motor Show is likely.

Australia

Speaking with TMR, Chrysler Australia's Dean Bonthorne confirmed that with the current Sebring sedan not being part of the Australian range, there are no plans to give the upcoming 200 a local launch.

As for the Sebring Cabrio however, Mr Bonthorne said that Chrysler Australia plans to continue offering this model "for as long as possible."
