Cheapest Open Top Porsches To Feature At 2009 Melbourne Motor Show

Something old, something new… Porsche Australia has today announced that it will be displaying a 1955 356 Speedster on its Melbourne Motor Show stand.

The highly collectible Speedster will join its modern-day equivalent, the updated Boxter convertible, providing open-top motoring enthusiasts with a little slice of Porsche history.

Back in its day, the 356 Speedster was the cheapest Porsche you could buy. Now it is one of the more collectible. In 1955, it cost the equivalent of around $15,000, was powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine and when pushed with a tail wind, could just manage 160km/h. Good examples of the 356 Speedster currently change hands for more than $200,000.

In rather stark contrast, the new-generation Boxster will be the cheapest open-top Porsche when it goes on sale in mid-March. It will cost just over $110,000, is powered by a new 2.9 litre ‘boxer’ six cylinder engine and will be capable of in excess of 250km/h.

The ever-increasing value of the 356 Speedster will be put to the test at the Shannons Melbourne Motor Show Auction on Monday March 9, when a Pre-A Speedster, goes under the hammer. Shannons are quoting a guiding range of $180,000-$210,000.

The Speedster in question is chassis number 80373, was built in March 1955 and delivered through US-agent Hoffmans in New York shortly afterwards.

It arrived in Australia in late 2003, imported by a prominent Australian 356 Register member, who had it professionally converted to right-hand drive and repainted in Silver. Inside there is contrasting black upholstery and correct style Beige woven carpets. Complimenting the silver paintwork is a burgundy folding top.

The Porsche was acquired by the current owner in 2005 and has been used sparingly since, primarily for weekend outings.

The Speedster is one of 50 vehicles and 60 items of memorabilia in the Melbourne Motor Show auction, which is the 14th by Shannons at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

All lots will be on display in the MEC’s Concourse area free to the public throughout the Motor Show from Friday February 27, with the auction conducted from 2.30pm on Monday March 9.
