Camaro Convertible And Camaro Z28 Cancelled

If you were holding out on buying a Camaro until the convertible or Camaro Z28 models were upon us (well, upon the US market), you may as well go out and buy the regular hardtop after all, because those two specials aren’t coming.

In what is a further sign of the depth of the troubles afflicting car makers and suppliers, the General has announced that the Camaro Convertible and Z28 models have both been delayed ‘indefinitely’.

The Camaro Convertible project fell over recently when the German company pegged to manufacture the roof went kaput, and while GM says it is looking for an alternative source, a spokesperson said that even if one is found it could take months to a year before production can begin.

Of course, the Camaro Convertible has been an up-and-down tale to begin with, and this isn’t the first time it’s been on hold.

The demise of the famed Z28 badge, on the other hand, is likely a surprise to no one.

While a 425kW (570hp) would likely sell very well, the US$50 million development cost isn’t a figure GM can justify – or even spare – in its current state.

In the meantime, there’s always Hennessy’s LS9-powered 525kW HPE700 Camaro.
